Verdict

An intriguing game, but one that may not hold your interest for that long.

Innovation & originality come together...

The only unique thing about Blast Works is the fusing mechanic. Your enjoyment of this title will entirely depend on how much you appreciate this, and how much longevity you get out of it. It’s a simple affair, which essentially equates to you using waves of enemies against one another by fusing weapons and chassis to your vehicle. This bits and bobs then expand your attacking options until they’re shot from your plane. Once you destroy an opponent, they go spinning off into the air and it’s up to you to catch them. This is something of a skill, as you want to make sure the planes are firing in the right direction, adding a level of complexity to the game that you don’t realise straight away.

The trouble is that while this is a genuinely interesting concept, we don’t think it really has the longevity to warrant your cash. At the end of the day, it’s still a fairly pedestrian shooter with a few bells and whistles. Very original bells and whistles, but they don’t add much to the genre. Shmup fans should definitely look into this one, but others probably won’t have too much interest.

Machine Man

Machine Man

Machine Man is an out of work video game character. Very bitter that no one (especially Capcom) has included him in their videogame. He's quite standoffish, and doesn’t give out compliments frequently. Does Machine Man believe in blogging? No one knows. “**** developers” is Machine Man’s favourite motto. If something is not within Machine Man’s “sphere of concern” then he doesn’t have an opinion on it. Machine Man thinks interviews, interviewers, and interviewees, are a waste of everyone’s time. “Who gives a ****?”, says Machine Man.
